Before you can pursue an MD or MS in India, you first need to complete the standard return pathway of clearing FMGE/NEXT, obtaining registration, and completing your internship. If you haven't read our step-by-step guide on returning to India after MBBS abroad, we recommend starting there. Once all of that is in place, here is what pursuing postgraduate education looks like:
Appear for NEET PG
If you wish to apply for MD/MS in India after MBBS abroad, the only way to do so is to appear for NEET PG. This will make you officially eligible for postgraduate entrance exams. You will be competing with Indian MBBS graduates on the same exam. NEET PG is a single national-level exam. It is conducted once a year and it is computer-based, with multiple-choice questions.
Understand the exam pattern and prepare accordingly.NEET PG is not just about knowledge, it is also about strategy and recall speed. It covers 19 MBBS subjects. You must have a strong grip on clinical concepts and also have the ability to solve 200 questions under time pressure. It is advised that you focus on high weightage subjects, use MCQ banks and revise multiple times. Also, learnt the art of analysing mock tests deeply. | ![]() |
Choose your specialisation
Once the results are out, your rank determines your specialisation options. Match your rank with previous year cutoffs and consider various factors such as interest, lifestyle and future. Learn to be flexible as many students adjust preferences based on rank rather than sticking rigidly to one branch.
![]() | Go through counsellingSeat allocation is not an automatic process, it requires your active input and participation. There are many types of counselling - All India Quota (AIQ), state quota counselling and deemed/private universities. The counselling process involves registration, fee payments, locking your choices and multiple rounds for absolute clarity. Fill as many realistic choices as possible for maximum benefit. |
Begin your postgraduate program
Once you get a seat, complete all your admission formalities such as document verifications and fee payments. Your program will be for 3 years and it includes academic learning, clinical duties and research work.
Pursuing MD/MS in India after MBBS abroad is completely possible, but it requires careful planning and patience. If you stay consistent, prepare smartly, and don’t rush the process, you can successfully secure a postgraduate seat and continue your medical career in India.
